As the consumer protection regulator for financial services, ASIC's aim is to improve the financial literacy of Australian consumers so that they can make informed decisions about financial products and services, and identify and avoid financial scams and rip-offs.

Money management skills should be learned at an early age, if young people are to become confident and informed consumers in adult life. FIDO's tips for young adults: making the right decisions with your money

In a media release on 30 June 2003, 'ASIC calls for financial literacy education in schools', ASIC outlined its goal to optimise the opportunities for all school leavers to acquire the necessary basic financial skills to function effectively in both their personal and work lives, noting that to achieve this goal the place of financial literacy education in the curriculum must be strengthened.

Adult financial literacy research
It is equally important that financial education programs are available for adult consumers. Research, such as the ANZ Bank's national surveys of adult financial literacy, released in May 2003 and November 2005, show that not everyone has the skills necessary to manage their financial situation and look after their money. ASIC's work on financial literacy aims to address the needs of the whole community for educational programs and tools.
